Cooper let out an ear-piercing whistle. “That is one sexy car, Rex. Who knew you had that hiding somewhere?”

“It has been my love for the past few years. I restored Lucy here from the ground up on my weekends off.” He flipped the keys back and forth in his hand.

“Can I take it for a spin?” Rain asked.

Rex lifted his eyebrows. “You? Hell no.”

Rain feigned offense. “I’d be a perfect lady as I was doing donuts in a parking lot.”

“Not gonna happen, Rain.” Rex looked at Alyssa. “Ready to go?”

Alyssa swallowed the lump in her throat. “How is everyone fitting in that car?”

She knew it was a stupid question, but she was hoping there would be a lot more people between her and him. Her anger was falling apart, and she was desperately trying to hold onto it. Thankfully, every time she remembered the kiss, she also remembered him running away from her as fast as he could.

Rex looked at the others then back to her. “I thought it could just be you and me. Dad is willing to take everyone else.”

“Aww, man. Come on. You can at least let two of us hitch a ride with you to experience Lucy,” Cooper whined.

“You can come along, Cooper,” Alyssa said happily.

She looked over to see Rex stiffen.

“If he gets to go, so do I,” Mason said. “A cherry red ’69 mustang is my dream car. Please, Rex.” The early afternoon sun reflected off his puppy dog eyes.

“He’s crumbling, boys. Go ahead and get in.” Jason descended the steps with a grin.

A dramatic sigh left Rex. “Fine but you two are sitting in the back.”

“No. That’s okay. I don’t—”

He cut her off. “They sit in the back or in the van.” His voice brooked no argument.

“The back is perfect.” Mason opened the passenger door. Cooper nodded as he followed him into the car.

Rex held the door open for Alyssa. Defeated she got into the car and buckled her seatbelt. In a matter of moments, Rex jumped into the car, revved the engine, and spun out of the gravel driveway. Cooper and Mason cheered holding their arms over their heads as if they were on a roller coaster.

“Do you like it?” Rex asked.

Alyssa knew less than nothing about cars. All she knew was that it was a pretty red car that could go fast. It also looked like a car she’d seen in a lot of movies. Cars didn’t impress her. She knew she should’ve been but cars didn’t get her motor running. No pun intended.

“It’s a very pretty car.” She said it loud enough to be heard over the engine and wind whipping through the car.

Somehow despite the noise surrounding them everything became quiet. Enough so she looked at the three guys in the car with her. All of them had equal looks of horror on their faces.

“Pretty?” Cooper said.

“This is a piece of Americana, Alyssa. She isn’t pretty. She’s a gorgeous masterpiece formed from hardworking Americans that value speed, longevity, and durability,” Mason waxed poetically.
